Paregoric Containing Preparations

Parepectolin and parelixir contain a gelling substance and a narcotic (paregoric) that acts to decrease the activity of the digestive tract. Thus, this slows down the diarrhea. These drugs should be used only when a clear liquid diet and the agents above have failed to control frequent diarrhea (one or more watery stools per hour).

Dosage
No more than four doses should be given in an eight-hour period without the approval of your doctor.

Side Effects
A narcotic overdose with paregoric is extremely rare. Drowsiness or nausea occur occasionally and are indications that the drug should be withdrawn. “Overshoot” can occur, in which the diarrhea is controlled so completely that bowel movements don’t occur for a week, so be careful.
